“Wikileaks”: To Publish or Not To

The Issues Involved for Journalism

The recent “Wikileaks” episode shook the confidentiality of diplomatic engagement, especially with the United States government. The release of leaked diplomatic cables selectively to the media, while surely an embarrassment for the US and affected parties, put the media in a spot. Journalism as a profession came under scrutiny. Some media published the leaks, some didn’t. What was right and what was wrong in this episode? Did publication further anybody’s interests and who benefited?

Here’s an opportunity for the Singapore media and related fraternity to engage a panel of experts on the issues involved.

The panellists are: Diplomat and director of the Institute of South-east Asian Studies, Ambassador K.
Kesavapany; media researcher Arun Mahizhnan; The Straits Times associate editor, Janadas Devan; and Marko M. Skoric, assistant professor at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University.

Singapore Press Club vice-president and Senior Executive Vice President at Singapore Press Holdings, Leslie Fong, is the Moderator.

The session is open to members and guests of members. There is no admission fee and light refreshments will be served.
