Dear members,

You are invited to explore the rich artistic traditions of the mighty Congo River that winds its way through the very heart of Africa. Encounter beautifully crafted pieces and learn about their importance in ceremonies and dances. The exhibition also displays works by Pablo Picasso, who in the early 20th century was strongly influenced by African art as he developed his modernist style. Drawing from the musée du quai Branly and other European collections of African art, Congo River: Arts of Central Africa is the first of its kind to be held in Southeast Asia.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Robert Farris Thompson, Professor of the History of Art, Yale University, will be giving a talk, and you are also invited for that. Learn about the rich and varied influences of the ancient Kongo kingdom on the world. Did you know that what’s commonly considered Latin dances are actually creolised Kongo dances? These include the tango which is representative of Argentina, Brazilian samba, and Cuba’s rumba and mambo.

Both events are free but please register by Wednesday 2nd March 2011. Specify if you’ll be attending the tour, the talk, or both.
