Singapore Press Club launches Student Chapter with JCU, Singapore as first institutional partner

Singapore Press Club (SPC) is pleased to announce the formation of its Student Chapter with the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the James Cook University (JCU), Singapore. Both organisations hope that this initiative will help impart a passion for journalism, media and communications in students, while providing them with role models to strengthen their knowledge and skills in these areas.

The MOU will facilitate the creation of a Media Club in JCU, Singapore, where students who share an interest in media and communications can further their enthusiasm and knowledge on the subject. JCU, Singapore will support members of the Media Club who wish to apply to become Student Members of SPC.

Under the MOU, SPC may accept JCU, Singapore student members for its mentoring programme, enabling students to learn more about journalism, media and communications from veteran journalists. This paves the way for students to become better prepared for the realities of the industry as they learn directly from seasoned professionals.

In addition, the collaboration with JCU, Singapore includes working together on speaking engagements, workshops, and/or conferences.

Ms Rachel Kelly, Management Committee Member of Singapore Press Club and Head of its Student Chapter programmes, said, “We hope that the collaboration will foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the media industry, as well as nurture and grow budding journalists at JCU, Singapore. It’s an exciting time for the sector, and the partnership will expose members not only to industry events, but also insightful conversations and networking with seasoned media professionals.”

Professor Chris Rudd OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Head of Campus, Singapore at James Cook University, said, “In today’s modern landscape, media and communications are critical to convey clear, useful and empathetic information, while being the key foundation to the exchanges of ideas and expertise. Through the various opportunities cultivated from this partnership, I hope that our young talents can deepen their skills and knowledge and realise their aspirations in the media and communications industry.”
