Four key take-aways from the panellists presentation and dialogue with participants:

  • Find themes to take photographs and build upon it as a passion project.
  • Catch it before its gone. Don't hesitate to take the photo, you can always review it and discard but you cannot re-enact the scene again if you missed it.
  • While taking photos in public is generally legal, risks arise from privacy violations, defamation, or using images for commercial purposes without consent. Do not post photos online with strangers faces if you have not asked for permission to do so to avoid being sued. Photojournalist taking photos for a news story is allowed in Singapore (media are given exemptions), unless the story is deemed to be defamatory.
  • Photography is an art, not a science. Take as many photos as you can to experiment and know what works best for you and that you like the most to create your own recognisable style.
