Singapore Press Club Talk | AI, the Media, and the Law: Global and Singapore Developments - What's Next?

As artificial intelligence accelerates disruption across global newsrooms, media organisations are confronting a fast-changing mix of opportunity, risk, and regulatory uncertainty. Around the world, publishers are challenging AI companies over the use of journalistic content, most recently with nine U.S. regional newspapers suing OpenAI, while others pursue commercial licensing deals that may redefine the future economics of news. At the same time, courts are wrestling with the limits of AI copyright law: Getty Images' bid to secure a landmark ruling against Stability AI (an AI image generator) was largely dismissed, highlighting the difficulty of applying traditional IP principles to generative technologies.

While these developments span jurisdictions, they raise common questions for media professionals everywhere: What rights do publishers have over their content? How can newsrooms engage with AI?

This session brings you up to speed on the global legal landscape — then turns the spotlight onto Singapore. We begin by unpacking Singapore's copyright regime as it applies to machine learning, clarifying what AI platforms may or may not do with content under current law. From there, we examine the legal considerations newsrooms must navigate when deploying AI in their own work: questions of ownership and authorship, who may bring a claim against whom, and the contractual terms and conditions that govern the use of generative AI tools.
