About SIFOM
The Singapore International Festival of Music (SIFOM) returns for the second season this October! This Festival showcases Singapore’s finest classical musicians/ensembles and premiere international musicians, award-winning rising opera stars from the Musical Olympus Foundation (Moscow) and performing artists and composers from Europe, Asia, Russia and Ukraine to name a few.
This year’s esteemed guests include members of the legendary Chamber Orchestra of Europe (reportedly the world’s best orchestra), Norway’s electrifying Ensemble 1B1 led by Russia’s most celebrated young violinist Mikhail Simonyan, as well as local Chinese music group Ding Yi Music Company, a beautiful dance musical Ikan Girl by the Bhumi Collective and a multi-discipline performance including jazz, ethnic, classical and pop by TO ensemble, to name but a few. Themed ‘Myths & Legends”, there is something for everyone in this enchanting and musical experience at the Festival! There is more to classical music than you know. 1. Free outreach activities (27 Aug – 30 Oct 2016) to bring music to everyone eg. schools, heartlands/public libraries (Bedok/ Choa Chu Kang/Woodlands/ Esplanade/ National Libraries); shopping malls (eg. Star Vista/ ION Orchard Singapore), etc; and the National Gallery Singapore.
2. Ticketed concerts (13-23 Oct 2016) – tickets are available at SISTIC. 10% off for MasterCard members, senior citizens, NSmen and students. Check SISTIC for other group promotions and bundled Festival Passes.

3. Free Festival Fringe performances (13-30 Oct 2016) eg free lunchtime performances in the civic district
Some concerts are raising funds to help gifted young musicians make their dream of a big break onto the world stage a reality. Outreach activities are carried out by musicians who volunteer their time and talent to bring music to everyone, including special needs children/youths (eg. Singapore School For The Deaf/ Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore/ ASPN Tanglin/ Pathlight School, etc), and the young and old at large. Each ticket sold will go towards supporting all these activities and making the festival possible.
Tickets are now available from SISTIC for the ticketed concerts. There are also free music treats for everyone which will be performed at the concert halls, to schools, the heartlands, shopping malls and even at the National Gallery Singapore!
SIFOM is Singapore’s (and South East Asia’s) first classical music festival that invigorates the concert-going experience for Singaporeans and promotes local musicians as well. The Festival is curated by internationally-renowned Conductor and Grammy-nominee, Darrell Ang, who is also the Artistic Director of SIFOM.
Highlights:
• SIFOM 2016 opens with reportedly the world’s best orchestra – Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE) on 13 Oct at the Victoria Concert Hall. COE was the Cultural Ambassador for the EU (2007 until 2013).
• The exhilarating programme includes an evocative dance musical theatre – Ikan Girl – based on an ancient Malay poem and folklore. Composed by Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin in collaboration with pianist Nabillah Jalal and produced by The Bhumi Collective (Ramu is a member of the Bhumi Collective).
• Spellbinding opera concerts by award-winning vocalists and members of the Musical Olympus Foundation featuring Li Ao (Bass-Baritone; winner of the prestigious Placido Domingo Operalia Award) and Vasilisa Barzhanskaya (Mezzo-Soprano; rising star and artist from the Bolshoi Theatre for young singers). And vocal concerts by our own soprano songbirds, Victoria Li Songwei and Nancy Yuen.
• Bizarre electronic soundscapes based on baroque music and created by Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg performed at Arts House Chamber.
• Recital of Thief in The Night and other Bizarre Tales – some of the most challenging and finger-twisting piano pieces by young musician Thomas Ang aims to raise funds to support budding musicians like him.
• Norway’s most dynamic ensemble 1B1 led by Mikhail Simonyan, world-famous violinist and Deutsche Grammophon artist, who received the highest level of recognition in Russia, will feature four of Singapore’s youngest musicians (age 10-16) one by one, on the same stage: Basil Ong (15 yr old violinist) / Kaelyn Soh (10 yr old violinist) / Mathea Goh (16 yr old violinist) and Japanese violinist Yuri Tanaka (11 yr old). This is made possible by Melody Strings Art Center.
• New Music from a Mythic Landscape – music inspired by Singapore’s landscape and composed by local composers.
• Local top-bill Chinese orchestra music from Ding Yi Music Company (DYMC)
• The year’s most enthralling piano recital The Sunken Cathedrals and Other Stories played by beautiful Kseniia Voksmianina who received a standing ovation recently at the Holland International Music Session
• A multi-discipline, interactive concert at Arts House (Play Den) …And there was N0th1ng by Tze. Discover music inspired by Asian philosophies and played carnatically on Western instruments by TO ensemble, founded by UK award-winning composer/pianist Tze.
· VOCO Singapore Ladies Choir and VOCE Singapore Men’s Choir will perform free at National Gallery Singapore on 15 Oct (2-5pm)
· Tanglewood Music School will present Graduates from The SIFOM Music Academy 2016, performing free at National Gallery Singapore on 15 Oct (2.30pm, 3.30pm & 4.30pm)
· Free lunch-time concert by musicians from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and SIFOM Orchestra. This is a festival fringe: Chamber Music@Arts House on Friday 14 October 2016 at Arts House Chamber, 1pm featuring Chamber Orchestra of Europe soloists & SIFOM Orchestra soloists playing
