Since the mid-1990s, artists from the Land of Cherry Blossoms have established their own creative identities within the context of global pop culture. Working across all mediums, from painting and sculpture to performance, photography and video, the featured artists have responded to the onset of the information age and the greater freedoms and uncertainties of contemporary society.

Trans-Cool TOKYO is co-organised by Singapore Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The guided tour is free and your guests are welcome. Members who wish to attend must register in advance and pay a nominal $10 per

The East-West Center is Now Accepting Applications2011 Senior Journalists Seminar

The Senior Journalists Seminar is a dialogue-and-travel program for journalists from the United States and from Asian countries with substantial Muslim populations. The seminar offers an opportunity for senior journalists to engage their peers on issues in the relationships between these Asian countries and the United States. Participants will meet with government and business officials, community and religious leaders, educators and students, local journalists and others to gain insights on the many diverse perspectives among Americans and Asian Muslims.

Theme: Bridging Gaps Between Americans and Asian Muslims

Dates: April 30 – May 21, 2011 (NOTE: Program dates have been changed from previous announcement)

Study Tour for Asian Journalists: Washington, DC; New York City, New York; Colorado Springs/Denver, Colorado

Study Tour for American Journalists: Dhaka, Bangladesh; Manila, Philippines; Mindanao, Philippines

The program opens and concludes with dialogue among all the participants at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Who Can Apply: Working print, broadcast, journal and online journalists from the United States and Asian countries with substantial Muslim populations, specifically Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand with a minimum of ten years of experience.

Funding: Roundtrip airfare for the study tour travel, lodging and per diem costs are provided by the East-West Center. Selected participants are responsible for their own visa fees and roundtrip airfare from their home city to Honolulu, where the study tour opens and concludes. A limited number of travel stipends will be available, however selected participants should expect some cost-sharing.

The East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a public, nonprofit institution that promotes better relations and understanding between the United States and the nations of the Asia Pacific region through cooperative research, education and professional development programs.

Tour of Malaysia’s Iskandar Development Region

The Club is organising a tour of Malaysia’s foremost emerging economic zone, Iskandar Malaysia, on Saturday 4 December. Just across the Second Link from Singapore in Johor, the development area will have five flagship zones where living, entertainment, environment and business seamlessly converge. A major undertaking by the Malaysian government, it marks yet another aspect of Malaysia’s drive for sustained economic growth.

The catalyst of change in this economic zone is Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB), which was set up to drive the projects that will be set up in the zone, through strategic investments and partnerships, contribution of land or granting of concessions and development rights.

With help from the CEO of Iskandar Investments’ Singapore office, Dato N. Parameswaran, IIB has organised a very interesting one-day programme for the Club, including a dialogue with Iskandar Investments new President and CEO Datuk Syed Mohamed Ibrahim.

Find out first hand what Malaysia’s Iskandar Region Development is all about, how its progressing and how Singapore can benefit from this ambitious economic and social project of our closest neighbour.

You may be familiar with the works of the Great Masters, and more recently, pieces by Chinese artists, but what about closer to home? Talented Southeast Asians have been expressing themselves artistically, with unique aesthetic sensibilities. So head to the Singapore Art Museum and be introduced to Thai artist Natee Utarit. An exceptional painter whose career spans over two decades, Natee’s stunningly vivid paintings have been a series of dialogues and debates on established Western painting traditions, with the ultimate aim of developing new possibilities for painting. His latest creations have increasingly been commentaries on Thai society and identity. This exhibition features more than 70 of the artist’s paintings drawn from SAM, the Bangkok University, the Queensland Art Gallery and private collections worldwide.

Meditation class at SPH

Singapore Press Club is starting a non-religious meditation class next month. Mr K C Onn, a meditation instructor who has been teaching at the Singapore Civil Service Association and MOE since 1995, will teach us the techniques of coping with the stress of working in a fast-paced work environment, by introducing contemplation and balance into our daily life.

To facilitate learning, class size is limited to 10 participants only, so register early.

Eminent Speaker Series: “Reflections and lessons from the Blair years”

British Labour politician and one of Tony Blair’s closest confidantes, Peter Mandelson, is the latest Guest Speaker in our Eminent Speaker series. The luncheon talk, co-sponsored by Raffles Hotel is being held in conjunction with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Foreign Correspondents Association. Lord Mandelson is also the author of The Third Man: Life at the Heart of New Labour, and copies of his book will be available at the luncheon.

Catch this master politician and Labour spinmaster addressing a media gathering for the first time in Singapore on Friday 24th September.

Volunteer stint for journalists in East Timor

Looking for adventure and an opportunity to help fellow journalists? Consider Timor-Leste. The International Center for Journalists is looking for experienced journalists to volunteer their time to teach their Timorese colleagues the basics of journalism. Ideally, the volunteer would conduct trainings for at least two weeks. The volunteer would cover their own costs; however, ICFJ will cover the cost of transport to and from its regional media houses – where the trainings would occur – and ICFJ will cover the cost of meals and accommodations in the districts, but not in Dili. There are five regional media houses – located in Baucau, Suai, Oecusse, Ermera and Maubisse. A sixth media house is located in Dili.

While in Dili, the volunteer would cover their own costs as well as airfare to and from Dili. ICFJ can help arrange low-cost accommodation with a Timorese family – approximately 250-300 USD per month. This is a great opportunity for a journalist who wants to experience Timor-Leste, get to know the culture and its people and do something to help Timorese journalists.

ICFJ is looking for print, radio, online and television journalists. ICFJ is also looking for volunteers with experience in fundraising and online advertising.
