Exclusive 15% discount for Guards at the Taj

Dear Member

You can now watch the award-winning play Guards at the Taj at a discounted rate, exclusive to the members of the Singapore Press Club.

Written by the talented American playwright Rajiv Joseph, directed by Jo Kukathas and performed by Ghafir Akbar and Jay Saighal, this wickedly-dark comedy is based on a myth surrounding the Taj Mahal that “nothing so beautiful shall ever be built again”.

In the vein of previous productions likeThe Pillowman and Disgraced, this is the kind of play that audiences have come to expect from Singapore Repertory Theatre.

The setting is India in 1648 on the night before the Taj Mahal opens to the public, but Rajiv Joseph’s script is strikingly modern. There is a reason he won the Obie Award for Best New Play.

Guards at the Taj opens in Singapore on November 14.

Programm for Singapore Press Center 2

20% off tickets to Shirkers – Saturday 20 Oct, 6:30-9:30pm Capitol Theatre

Dear members,

The Singapore Film Society has secured for its 60th Anniversary Gala Screening on Saturday 20 October 2018, 6:30pm, the exclusive Singapore premiere of the 2018 Sundance-winning documentary, Shirkers, by Singaporean filmmaker, Sandi Tan. It will be the only time this film will be shown in a theatre in Singapore as it will only be distributed on Netflix subsequently.

Sandi received the 2018 Sundance Film Festival – Best Director Award for World Cinema Documentary. She is one of Variety’s 10 Documentary Filmmakers to Watch 2018, and one of Indiewire’s 10 Rising Female Filmmakers of 2018.

ABOUT SHIRKERS
Movers & Shakers, meet Shirkers
Shirkers is a quirky real-life documentary about teenage VHS-bootlegger Sandi Tan (now an award-winning filmmaker/writer based in Los Angeles). In 1992, along with her fellow film-geek pals Jasmine Ng (now an established filmmaker/activist in Singapore) and Sophie Siddique (now Associate Professor & Head of Film Studies at Vassar College, New York), they shot Singapore’s first road movie with their enigmatic American mentor, Georges Cardona. The film was called “Shirkers”. Sandi wrote the script and played the lead, S, a 16-year-old assassin collecting and then eliminating her own tribe. After shooting wrapped, Georges absconded with all of the 16mm footage. The 16mm Kodak cans were recovered 20 years later, sending Sandi, now a novelist in Los Angeles, on a personal, singular odyssey across two continents in search of Georges’ vanishing footprints — and her own.
